Congratulations to St. Teresa's Roman Catholic Primary School in Irlam who have recently received a defibrillator from Hand on Heart!
The defibrillator was donated to St. Teresa's by local business Imperative Training through their Corporate Social Responsibility Scheme.
Chatsworth High School and Community College is in Salford. Formerly Newcroft, Chatsworth has been open for 6 years. We cater for 100 students from 11 to 19 years with Severe Learning difficutlies, Profound and Multiple Learning difficutlies and Autism.
Ullswater Community College is highly successful and quickly growing college based in Penrith, Cumbria. Excellent GCSE and A Level Results have established this school as one of the best in the North West of England and their recently opened Applied Learning Centre looks set to greatly develop the learning of practical, trade-based skills in the area.
"The Thomas Hardye School entered the Hand on Heart’s campaign to win an automated external defibrillator. The school is very pleased to announce that we were chosen as recent winners of the campaign.
The school has received a Philips Heartstart HS1 defibrillator kit, training for staff in its use and CPR training for students.
Medical experts believe many children could be saved if an automated external defibrillator (AED) is used within minutes of a collapse. However, there is currently no national system in place in the UK to ensure AED’s are present and in working order in schools.
Merchants’ Academy, an independent comprehensive school founded in 2008, is sponsored by the Society of Merchant Venturers together with the University of Bristol. The Society of Merchant Venturers, with its strong charitable interests, has been influential in Bristol for more than 450 years. Their commitment to education dates back to the 1550s and they founded and continue to play an important role in Colston’s School and Colston’s Girls’ School. The University of Bristol, as co-sponsor, is committed to encouraging the number of local students seeking a place within Higher Education. Its Graduate School of Education is highly regarded both nationally and internationally for its training of teachers and associated research.
St Laurence staked a claim to one stating the reasons why this school would benefit from such a vital piece of equipment.We were very fortunate to be chosen to receive this machine which duly arrived on the 7th of December .We also had full training session provided for 6 staff and 30 students.
“In 2003, my mother was working as a nurse at Kent College, Canterbury’s medical centre. She had a life long history of heart conditions, having been born with two holes in her heart. On January 16th, my mother collapsed and died in the medical centre; having a defibrillator could have potentially saved her if the statistics of a 78% chance of survival with the use of such equipment are correct. If this could prevent the death of any students at school, then the possession of an AED is imperative.”
Abbey School is a school for pupils with moderate learning difficulties and complex needs. These complex needs range from physical to others such as Autism, Downs Syndrome, PDA, Attachment Disorder as well as learning difficulties.
The physical needs are as follows:-
- 1% Sudden Adult Death Syndrome in the family
- 7% Heart problems
- 64% Medical needs
Aylish Doherty knows how important it is to have the life-saving defibrillators in school after her best friend had a heart attack in class.
And now, thanks to her, Little Lever School has the vital equipment, are used to shock and restart the heart.
Aylish returned to the school to see the equipment presented to staff and pupils a year after her friend
Alice Brierley had the heart attack when she was in Year 11. Alice pulled through and is now at Bolton College.
Bramhall High School, Stockport
Bramhall High School is situated at the heart of a community of over 25,000 residents. The student population is 1,342 with a staff of approximately 180.In addition the school shares facilities with a satellite Community Policy base and Recreation Centre which is open to the public out of school hours. I feel this alone demonstrates that Bramhall High would be an ideal setting for a defibrillator.
Although we aim to teach all our students first aid skills and resuscitation, having a medical background I have seen the difference that defibrillation make to the patients survival and health following a cardiac event. So to have the reassurance that we are prepared for any cardiac event, I feel, would be good practice and potentially life saving.
